Tips for Taking Care of Yourself When Ill (Self Care)

General:

  • Avoid contact with others.
  • Stay home from work, school, church or other social activities until symptoms have subsided for 24 hours.
  • Rest.
  • Drink extra fluids.

Sore throat:

  • Gargle with warm salt water.
  • Use throat lozenges.

Nasal congestion:

  • Use saline nose drops or sprays.
  • Use a humidifier.

* Follow manufacturer’s directions.

* Failure to do so can lead to additional health problems.

  • Don’t smoke. Avoid second hand smoke.

Fever and muscle aches:

  • Use acetaminophen or Ibuprofen.

 

Remember: You will likely recover at home without needing medical care or prescription treatment. If you are at high risk of complications, call your health care provider to discuss your options.

 

Immediately seek medical care if you experience one or more of the following:

  • Difficult, painful or rapid breathing
  • Slow, weak breathing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Extreme drowsiness and difficulty awakening
  • Disorientation or confusion
  • Constant vomiting or diarrhea (especially in elderly person or young children)
  • Coughing up blood
  • Blue lips, tongue or face

  • Too weak to move your arms or legs
  • Are you feeling better, then suddenly experiencing a high fever or repeat illness
  • Has it been more than 12 hours since you urinated
